Research summary
Identifying patients at high risk of postoperative complications before they have their surgery informs discussions with those patients about whether they wish to proceed with surgery at all, and may help their treating clinicians adapt their treatment to reduce the incidence of those complications.
We aim to use echocardiography, a non-invasive test, to characterise the way that the heart fills during exercise in a group of patients deemed by their treating clinicians to be at high risk of postoperative complications. We will recruit patients who are having a supervised exercise test anyway as part of their usual preoperative assessment.
We envisage that this could be the first step in investigating whether such exercise-induced changes could be used to predict the likelihood of postoperative complications in these patients.REC name
