Research summary
The incidence of stone disease is increasing. Many newly diagnosed stones are not symptomatic and there is a debate as to whether these need to be treated as aggressively as those patients who present with symptoms. There is a paucity of data for the outcomes associated with managing these stones conservatively. We are trying to look at the ecomonic impact on treatment; conservative versus operative versus non-operative management and the timing of any such treatment. We are trying to assess which makes the most sense economically.
In order to do this, it is possible to historically identify a cohort of patients from between 5 and 10 years ago and cost their management. It will be possible to generate a decision analysis tree for the management of stone disease and to cost each leg of this tree. From this it will be possible to compare the cost of various modalities of treatment and their timing.REC name
