  • Research summary

Research into young people’s experiences of inpatient eating disorder treatment suggests relationships with peers while in treatment can be both supportive and unhelpful. Healthcare professionals and parents and carers have acknowledged their impact.

This study proposes to explore experiences of inpatient peers for young people admitted to eating disorder inpatient treatment from the perspectives of young people during their admission and after their discharge, parents and carers and healthcare professionals.

The research study will be a multi-perspective interview study with the following participant groups recruited from NHS Scotland inpatient CAMHS:

    - Group 1: Young people currently receiving eating disorder inpatient treatment.
    - Group 2: Young people with past experience of eating disorder inpatient treatment.
    - Group 3: Parent and carers of young people with current or past experience of eating disorder inpatient treatment.
    - Group 4: Healthcare professionals working within inpatient CAMHS settings.

Healthcare professionals will identify and inform potential participants about the study. The circulation of the study information will capture participants for Group 4.

The researcher will arrange an interview with potential participants who express an interest. Participants will be asked to provide consent before the interview and complete a demographics questionnaire. The interview will focus on experiences of relationships with inpatient peers and will take between 20 and 60 minutes. The interview will be audio recorded. Young people will be compensated for their participation with a £10 voucher.

Group 1 will be invited to take part in a follow up interview once they have been discharged.

Transcripts will be analysed and written into a report.
