Research summary
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19 ) is an infectious disease caused by a virus. The most common symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath. Most cases have only mild symptoms, but some develop severe pneumonia. The current way to find out if someone has the infection is to detect the virus in a nose swab, throat swab or spit sample. At present, there are no accurate tests which can tell if someone has had an infection. Prof. Randall and colleagues are developing antibody tests using a variety of proteins which need to be checked for sensitivity and accuracy. They will test blood from 20 people with Covid-19 and 20 people who have no symptoms of Covid-19.
Case Participants will be patients in Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy who have a diagnosis of COVID-19 infection confirmed by nasopharyngeal swab and will be age between 18-99 years. Control participants with be people with no history of COVID-19 infection and who have not had any symptoms that could be related to the virus in the last four months.
