  • Research summary

People with hair loss regularly describe difficulties at the start of their journey in securing a diagnosis and treatment, and delays in referral to secondary care. Clinicians frequently struggle to accurately diagnose and measure hair loss over time. Therefore, pathways to secure early treatment, along with accurate and responsive hair loss assessment tools, will benefit alopecia patients by improving diagnostic accuracy, enable effective monitoring and ultimately improve treatment efficacy in this group.
This project is split into two complementary arms:
    1) “ETAP” (Early Treatment to prevent Alopecia Progression) aims to better understand whether early identification and treatment of alopecia at first presentation will increase hair re-growth rates and reduce the risk of relapse and disease progression in the longer term.
    2) “GAIA” (Generating Artificial Intelligence assisted assessment for Alopecia) aims to generate novel artificial intelligence (AI) assisted assessment to enable early diagnosis and support monitoring of alopecia over time. Our ambition is to design new AI algorithm for objective measurement of hair loss and develop a novel mobile app (“GAIA”) as point-of-care for people with alopecia.
