Research summary
This pilot study aims to explore whether a randomised control trial is a feasible way of testing whether a workshop called HOPES, is effective compared with a control group, which will then inform future large-scale trials (if it is acceptable and feasible to do so). The HOPES workshop is a 5-part workshop that is aimed to provide support and education to parents or carers of young people who are struggling to regulate their emotions. This can play out in challenging behaviours such as self-harm and substance misuse.
The main components of the workshop include relationship mindfulness and emotional validation skills based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. The workshop has already been developed and refined at the Maudsley Hospital, going through three rounds of intervention. Whilst pilot data so far has shown that the carers have responded positively to the workshop, there has not been any comparison data to show that it is significantly more effective compared to having no treatment. Therefore a randomised control design is the next natural developmental step for the worskshop.
The study will be conducted at a child and adolescent outpatient service that is connected with the Maudsley Hospital. The study will last seven months in total, from recruitment right through to the final outcome measures. The first four workshops which will be delivered weekly over one month, followed by a fifth follow up session two months later, and then final “post contact” outcome measures after another two months. The research is co-sponsored by Kings College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.REC name
