Data collection arrangements
Over the last three decades, minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) has gradually been adopted by liver surgeons worldwide. According to the recent Southampton guidelines, MILS is now considered the standard approach for minor liver resections, while implementation of major MILS should be handled in a stepwise fashion and combined with structured training in centers who have completed the learning curve for minor MILS. Many guideline statements have been developed mostly on the basis of data reported from specialized centres. However, the reproducibility of these data outside expert centres remains questionable. This emphasizes the need for retrospective and prospective data collection among different hospital settings in different countries. Hence, The European Registry of Minimally Invasive liver Surgery (E-MILS Registry) has been established. The E-MILS Registry is established to collect data of all patients of 18 years and older who underwent minimally invasive liver surgery for all surgical indications. Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery is defined as pure laparoscopic, hand-assisted, laparoscopic-assisted, single incision laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Data will be collected from centres across Europe and United Kingdom. The registry contains variables regarding demographics, medical and surgical history, tumour characteristics, indication for surgery, operation details, postoperative course, histopathological details, and follow up.
Research programme
The E-MILS Registry aims: 1. To collect data of all MILS procedures in Europe and to provide a comprehensive picture of patient and tumour characteristics, diagnosis and outcomes of MILS. 2. To create possibilities for liver centres across Europe to collaborate in improving patient outcomes. 3. To collect data of all MILS procedures in order to plan for future research studies. Data of the E-MILS Registry will be used for study projects when the Registry Committee deems there is a good number of inclusions. No study projects are defined in advance.
