Research summary
Dysmenorrhoea in women is very common, approximately three quarters of young women and a quarter to a half of adult women experience pain. It has been proposed that the pains felt are due to the uterine contractions similar to when a women is in labour. I intend to look at whether there is any association between severity of pains during menstruation and labour pains and whether this could help women decide which analgesia could be appropriate for them. After a women has given birth, periods can become less painful and more manageable and this is why this study is being conducted in primigravida women. They may also have preconceived ideas about how painful their labour is going to be based on previous experience and this could potentially influence results. A questionnaire is to be handed out to primigravida women containing questions on dysmenorrhoea and pain in labour to determine whether there is any connection between the two as well as an information leaflet to explain the purpose of the study. The women are to be recruited postnatally. I also plan to leave some information at the antenatal clinics in the weeks prior to starting my elective to make the women more aware. I intend to see the patients on the wards and answer any questions they may have.
