Research summary
The study aims to investigate the uptake of HIV testing in a busy colposcopy unit. It also investigates the prevalence of infection with Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) among patients who are found to have High Grade Cervical smear abnormalities ( Moderate and Severe Dyskaryosis). The prevalence of HIV in Birmingham adult population is estimated to be more than 2/1000. All patients attending Colposcopy Clinic at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital will be offered a blood test after counselling and obtaining an informed consent. The patients with low grade cervical smear abnormalities will also be offered the test which will act as our control population. The study will continue for a year. Uptake of HIV test and HIV sero-prevalence in the each of women with high and low grade abnormalities will be calculated and reported.
