Research summary
Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is a relatively new field and its popularity is increasing mainly because it offers distinct advantages in terms of patient satisfaction and a decrease in the length of patients stay in hospital.Increasingly more and more operations including those for bowel cancer are being done laparoscopically. Surgical technique, anaesthetic management for such surgery is also evolving.Diamorphine has been used for many years in the management of pain via the intrathecal (spinal) route. To our knowledge there are no randomised studies of the useage of Intrathecal Diamorphine in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, though it has been used in other types of surgery such as Orthopaedics and Obstetrics. Currently there are no guidelines for using Diamorphine in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in relation to the dose. The dose would vary depending upon the complexity of operation and the patient characteristics such as height. In this study we aim to establish a dosing guideline for the use of Intrathecal Diamorphine for laparoscopic colorectal surgery.Based on this pilot study a larger study is planned to make the results more significant clinically and statistically.
