Research summary
Use of complementary therapies in medicine (CAM), especially rheumatology is very topical, with recent systematic reviews highlighting this. However, previous studies in the US and New Zealand suggest that patients often do not volunteer information about their use of such treatments as they believe that the physician will not be supportive, this practice may be detrimental, not least because some herbal remedies for example may interact with other prescribed medications. In this study we will survey use of CAM among patients attending rheumatology outpatients, specifically asking whether they have ever been invited to volunteer this information, and enquire about perceived physician support for such treatments. Information about diagnosis will be obtained from notes review, allowing breakdown according to diagnosis of inflammatory/non-inflammatory conditions. We will also ask rheumatologists about their usual practice, and will assess whether this varies by grade of sex of physician. We will not assess effectiveness of CAM in this study.
