  • Research summary

What is the relationship between patient experience and impact on quality of life in Sjögren's syndrome patients with dry eye disease?

Sjögren’s syndrome is an auto-immune disease that often causes a bothersome condition known as dry eye disease. Dry eye disease occurs when the tear glands do not make enough tears, or the composition of the tears is not sufficient to protect the eyes. Sjögren's syndrome patients with dry eye disease will be recruited primarily through their involvement with the British Sjögren's Syndrome Association and asked to answer 42 questions about their experience and quality of life. Any patient with Sjögren’s syndrome and dry eye disease will be eligible to participate, and will be recruited through the British Sjögren's Syndrome Association or through Prof. Francisco Figueiredo's weekly dry eye clinic. Questions include topics such as length of time with the disease, when was diagnosis obtained, which treatments are used and how frequently, and what is the resulting impact on quality of life. The results will be analysed to determine if certain patient experiences relate to quality of life. Should certain factors be strongly linked to impact on quality of life, further research could be done to determine ways to address the corresponding needs in such patients. The results of this analysis, when published, will also help ophthalmologists determine which steps in the patient journey could be addressed to improve patient quality of life.
This survey is funded by Santen S.A.S., a pharmaceutical company invested in treating diseases of the eye.
