  • Research summary

The study seeks to grow malaria parasites (Plasmodium species) from UK malaria patients in the laboratory to enable studies of drug susceptibility. We will use these parasites, growing in our culture dishes, to test current and new antimalarial drugs against clinically relevant parasites from patients we see today rather than testing against older parasites which were mainly collected in the 1970s and 1980s. Established growth cultures will also allow us to generate genome sequence information for these "modern" parasites, and this is particularly useful for the lesser studied species of malaria parasite.
