  • Research summary

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients experience breathing difficulties because the deep airways in their lungs become narrowed. COPD patients use inhaler drugs to provide relief. However, current inhalers are inefficient. They deliver a ‘coarse-mist’ of drug-droplets that do not reach the deep airways.

In our study, we will use a ‘fine-mist’ inhaler of drug-droplets, tagged with radioactive tracer to track them. We will take lung images to see if the drug-droplets reach the deep airways, and determine if this improves breathing in patients. Our research may allow development of new, more efficient inhalers to improve treatment for COPD patients.
