Research summary
Presbyopia is the condition where near tasks, e.g. reading, become difficult due to loss of flexiblity in the lens inside the eye as a result of ageing. It can be corrected by the use of spectacles, contact lenses (CL's), by the surgical implantation of lenses into the eye (intraocular lenses), or elective laser refractive surgery.
Correction of presbyopia with CL's can be achieved by the use of reading spectacles 'over' the top of CL's prescribed for the correction of distance vision only; by the use of monovision CL's (the use of a CL prescribed for the correction of distance in one eye, and the use of a CL prescribed for the correction of near in the other eye); and by the use of multifocal CL's (lenses that focus at multiple working distances, i.e. near, middle-distance and far). The use of monovision and multifocal CL's, however, may be accompanied by reduced stereopsis (ability to judge depth, and therefore distances), when driving. The effects of the two types of presbyopia correction (monovision and multifocals) on driving, e.g. reaction times, are not fully understood.
The purpose of this study then is to compare driving performance (in a driving simulator) when wearing four different pairs of CL's. Three of the pairs of CL's will simultaneously correct subjects' distance and near vision, whilst the fourth pair will correct their distance vision only. All the CL types used in the study are CE marked and approved for use in Europe.
All subjects will be recruited, screened and enrolled at the Visioncare Research site under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The Transport Research Laboratory site will act as a co-investigational site performing the driving simulation study procedures, only (Visits 2&4). Thus, although two sites are listed, only one cohort of subjects will be recruited.
