Research summary
Blood donor populations represent a valuable sentinel population in which the emergence and spread of new pathogens can be studied. Bioarchive samples along with detailed travel, vaccination and exposure history would allow the detection and study of the emergence and spread of pathogens into the UK. This includes monitoring arthropod-borne viruses spreading into the UK due to climate change.
Donors would be asked to complete a survey covering travel, vaccination and exposure history. This would then be matched with the residual blood sample leftover from routine donor testing which would then be separated at the blood processing centre in Filton and sent to the NHSBT Bioarchive in Oxford. These samples and anonymised information given by the donor will be used for NAT testing, NGS and/or serology to study the emergence of pathogens in the UK by UKHSA or NHSBT.REC name
