  • Research summary

The research focuses on staff working in GP practices that have a partnership with parkrun UK. parkrun is a free, weekly 5 kilometre run where anyone can run or volunteer. These events take place in hundreds of parks throughout the world, including seven in Leeds.
Previous studies have reported mental and physical health benefits from participating in parkrun and staff at parkrun practices are encouraged to ‘prescribe’ parkrun to patients
It has also been noted that many GP practice staff lead sedentary lifestyles and suffer from subsequent associated health problems. It is hoped that staff at parkrun practices will be encouraged to take part in parkruns themselves. However, no previous work has explored the effect of being a parkrun practice on the wellbeing of practice staff, or the feelings of the staff themselves about parkrun.
This study aims to find out what the GP practice staff think about prescribing parkrun to patients and whether they have been encouraged to join in themselves. It will explore whether staff think that their own physical and mental wellbeing has improved as a result and will attempt to discover any barriers to participating in or recommending parkrun.
We will achieve our aims by distributing a survey to staff at participating practices and conducting focus groups to obtain more in-depth information.
