Research summary
In COPD, significant inflammation is present in the small airways. Recent advancement in measuring techniques means that a surrogate value of this inflammation can now be obtained, non-invasively.Many inhalers delivery medicines that are relatively large particles. Large particles are deposited in larger airways, and may not therefore reach the areas of the lung we would wish to target. We wish to target these small airways using anti-inflammatory (steroid) inhalers that delivery the medicine as very fine particles. We will compare these effects to a short course of systemic steroid tablets as well as a placebo.
