Research summary
A departmental move to newer facilities at a time of NHS funding restrictions found the department in a new outpatient facility with no wall decorations in the clinical and waiting areas. This estate move coincided with an initiative to reduce paediatric surgical waiting lists by operating at weekends and then use the reimbursed fees to invest in improving the workplace environment. The major component of this was to buy some artwork commissioned from a local contemporary gallery along with loaning some artworks from a regional civic gallery and a national loan scheme. The hanging of these art works should have an impact on the environment in the outpatient department both for patients, their carers and also for members of staff.
