Research summary
The Historical Clinical Risk Management-20, Version 3 (HCR-20v3) is a risk assessment tool that is used to assess an individual’s risk of violence. The Female Additional Manual (FAM) contains nine risk factors that are believed to be associated with risk of violence in women. The FAM was designed to be used in addition to the HCR-20v3 when assessing risk of violence in women. Previous research suggests that some factors that are associated with an increased risk of violence are also associated with an increased risk of self-harm.
This study will examine the link between scores on the HCR-20v3 and the FAM and frequency of self-harm in a female forensic inpatient setting. The study will explore whether higher scores on the HCR-20v3 are associated with a higher frequency of self-harm. The study will also explore whether using the FAM items increases the association between the HCR-20v3 and frequency of self-harm. If the results show that the HCR-20v3 does predict self-harm, the study will explore which particular items on the HCR-20v3 and FAM are predictive.
