  • Research summary

The present study is proposed as a dissertation project for the Masters in Health Psychology. The aim is to investigate whether having a dog as part of the family improves the quality of life and feelings of isolation and loneliness, for children and young adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes. Specific factors will be investigated to ascertain whether a dog can provide improved health related quality of life and reduce the feelings of isolation from peers. This may help children and young adolescents establish a good diabetes regime and therefore better glycaemic control, plus improved relationships with their peers. Improved glycaemic control results in better long term health outcomes for a person with diabetes. Participants will be asked to complete some questionnaires including demographic information, relationship with their dog, quality of life and loneliness. Possible participants will be recruited from Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, Royal Surrey Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital.
