Research summary
Digital Narrative Transformative Framework, DNTF Application for Behavioural Risk Factor Modification in CVD Patients: A Feasibility Study
Digital technologies (e.g. wearable, portable phones and smartphones using SMS, the Internet and software applications) have been affirmed through systematic and meta-analytic evidences to appear as an effective and potent means of intervention for protective behaviors (physical activity, PA and healthy food intake) and clinical factors (total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, and low density lipoproteins) modifications; and more potent in multiple outcome treatment (e.g. medication adherence plus…) but appear weak in abating risky behaviors (smoking, alcohol intake and unhealthy diet).
Further to this, as a promising and potential enhancement to address the weaknesses of digital technologies alone in modifying CVD risky behavioral factors; digital narrative approach, DNA through a carefully synthesized scoping review, has shown sufficient indices (in theories, models, behavior change constructs, processes, mechanisms and outcomes) as a means of intervention but has however been under-utilized in clinical trials for CVD risk factor modification. The combination of the potency and potential of identified digital technologies, and digital narrative approach as a means of intervention for CVD risk factor modification therefore stands a chance of being tested in an evidence-based clinical trial. Hence, a feasibility study to explore the possibility of applying DNA framework in CVD risk factor modification.
The objective of this feasibility study is to explore the possibility of applying DNA framework in CVD risk factor modification. This study will be based on results from our scoping review on digital storytelling for CVD risk factor modification using the Digital Narrative Approach (DNA) as set out in Digital Storytelling Transformative Framework (DSTF).
This study will done in NHS Highland Raigmore Hospital within a period of 6 months using quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses methods.
