  • Research summary

Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is a global epidemic that is estimated to double over the next 10 years. The purpose of this research is to extend our work in Newham on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), where DM2 is important, and investigate DM2 within an Asian population in the Newham and east London region. Asian population was selected due to the increased likelihood of the development of DM2, but also due to the high number of Asians within the UK affected by this chronic disease. The study will further our understanding of how DM2 affects a specific ethnic group within the UK, where there is an urgent need to address clinical DM2 problems, as well as allow a more focused biological understanding of key metabolisms and mediators involved in DM2. Moreover, the research is likely to lead to increased current knowledge on prevention and reduction of the number of people in various populations developing DM2. The study would take place at Newham Hospital (Dr Essam Elmahdi and others) and in collaboration with Prof Laurence Harbige, Deputy Director, Lipidomics and Nutrition Research Centre, London Met University (www.londonmet.ac.uk/profiles/staff/laurence-harbige/). The study requires a single small blood sample (5ml) and cheek cell sample from Asian diabetic patients and controls between the ages of 30-60. We will investigate blood lipids and fatty acid metabolism as well as inflammatory biomarkers (proteins produced by the body during inflammation). The study is expected to last 24 months with patients needing to be seen once to have a small blood sample taken.
