Research summary
Existing evidence suggests that testicular cancer patients who completed treatment more than 12 months ago find that existing health-related quality of life questionnaires inadequately cover the issues they face; and that they have unmet supportive care needs.
To address this problem, the present study aims to 1) comprehensively explore what health-related quality of life issues are relevant for patients with testicular cancer more than 12 months after receiving treatment; 2) establish what types of supportive care would be most helpful for patients with testicular cancer posttreatment; 3) discern how health-related quality of life issues, and supportive care needs, may differ between groups receiving different treatment approaches, more than 12 months after treatment; and 4) produce a strategy of supportive care that can be implemented using existing infrastructure of ongoing supportive care initiatives at The Royal Marsden Hospital.
To achieve these aims, the present study will consist of two phases. The two phases will consist of a systematic literature review; interviews with clinicians with experience of caring for patients with testicular cancer; interviews with individuals who have been treated for a testicular cancer diagnosis (all Phase 1a); collecting relevance and importance ratings of health-related quality of life issues and supportive care needs from individuals who have been treated for testicular cancer (Phase 1b); and then producing a strategy for health-related quality of life assessment and treatment-stratified supportive care in this patient cohort (Phase 2).
