Research summary
Patients with distal tibia fractures can be treated non-operatively in cast, or operatively by internal fixation, intramedullary nailing or external fixation. The indications for each option vary widely between institutions, which is due to previous trauma experience, available services and patient demands. At our institution in Hull, we have an established circular external fixation frame service that has been treating distal tibia fracture patients for many years, and has collected information for clinical governance on a departmental database. We know that for complex intra-articular distal tibia fractures, circular frames produce good results compared to internal fixation. On the other hand, we do not know how the outcomes compare when circular external fixation is used for extra-articular and partial articular fractures. The purpose of this study is to publish the outcomes of these specific fracture types and then compare them to other modes of treatment.
