  • Research summary

Background: The current COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences require research to understand the ways in which young people are responding to this evolving health emergency and its social consequences. In the short-term, we need to track the psychological reactions to both the immediate health threat and associated social restrictions. In the medium to long-term we need data on key factors relating to risk and resilience, as well as rich data exploring local young people’s experiences, so as to facilitate individual and community recovery from the wide social and economic consequences, which will fall hardest on the most vulnerable communities.

Method: This research will utilise both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the impact of COVID-19 on young people in deprived rural and coastal communities.

Discussion: The proposed research will provide a timely evidence base upon which to develop and evaluate psychosocial interventions for young people and wider communities within Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Norfolk
