Research summary
Shame is documented throughout the literature as a complex emotion to both develop as a response to traumatic events and to perpetuate trauma symptoms through non-disclosure (Gilbert, 2010; Lee, Scragg &Turner, 2001, Lewis, 1971; 2002, Tangney & Dearing,). However, as digital therapy is only recently being recognised as a routine treatment option (APA, 2021), research is lacking in the experiences of shame within digital therapy room, in particular exploring the perspective of client.
This study aims to better understand the impact the method of therapy delivery may have on the client’s experience of treatment for PTSD; specifically how clients in trauma-focused therapy navigate and experience making disclosures that may be related to feelings of shame. Having a greater understanding of experiences of and what can facilitate disclosures of shame in remote therapy, can better improve online adaptations of trauma focused treatment and overall improve therapy outcomes for trauma services and individuals seeking therapy.REC name
