Research summary
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that requires life-long treatment. Biologic medications have revolutionised the treatment of psoriasis, with 60-80% of patients having skin ‘clear’ or ‘nearly clear’ of psoriasis within a year of treatment. There have been numerous studies that have explored the impact of psoriasis on quality of life, but less is known about what people living with psoriasis value in their care. A recent patient engagement exercise conducted as part of the care redesign programme of work at the trust explored what aspects of a psoriasis outpatient service is important to them. Findings suggested a shift in what patients considered as value-adding activities at the beginning of commencing a biologic treatment, compared to those on a an established biologic treatment. To date, there have been no studies that have explored dimensions of value in outpatient services across these patient cohorts. This study therefore has three objectives (1) To identify what patients within chronic psoriasis value in an outpatient psoriasis service; (2) To identify what dimensions of this value are shared among patients who have more recently started a biologic treatment compared to those on an established biologic treatment; (3) To identify how patients feel these dimensions of value should be delivered. It is anticipated this research will inform service-redesign and transformation projects, particularly those exploring different ways outpatient care in the NHS can be delivered. The methodology for this study will be 1-1 in-depth interviews.
