  • Research summary

Persistent pain is a long term condition which has no conclusive medical treatment. All current evidence and medical guidelines for managing persistent pain recommend a bio-psychosocial (a combined biological, psychological, and social) approach that encourages self-management of pain. This aims to help people living with persistent pain to achieve a good quality of life and recovery from distress by being well supported and connected to their community and allowing the person to understand how to manage their symptoms. This project aims to test the effectiveness and accessibility of a new form of e-learning pain management programme (e-PMP) that aims to improve the management of persistent pain.

A programme including ten modules to be completed over a 12 week duration have been created into digital format following a Learning Management System. Each module includes detailed material, including education about pain, the pain system and how the body produces pain; techniques to better manage pain, including relaxation, goal setting, pacing, and exercise; as well as additional resources that users can access and download. The programme uses multiple learning techniques that is as engaging as a face to face standard pain management programme and does not compromise on quality. It is hoped that the study will demonstrate that with better understanding of pain, people will have increased confidence and ability in self-managing their condition, reducing the burden on health care services. This project is in strong agreement with the principles of developing a Healthier Wales and adheres to the Welsh Language standards and meeting the needs of the population of Wales whilst continuing to be prudent in its application.
