  • Research summary

The NHS needs to use digital technologies, such as apps and websites, to help deliver healthcare. Our project focuses on digital health interventions for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. South Asians are particularly likely to develop cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is important that interventions aimed at their prevention and/or treatment are suitable for these individuals, and lessons learned will be relevant to other populations.
We wish to understand how South Asian individuals use digital health interventions for cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Specifically, we want to understand what encourages the use of digital health interventions and what acts a barrier. We will do this by holding a series of focus group discussions to understand how and why people from South Asian backgrounds use technology. Due to the pandemic we will hold our focus groups discussions online with 5-6 individuals taking part at a time. One set of focus groups will include members of the public and patients and the second set of focus groups will include healthcare professionals. Data will be audio-recorded and transcribed prior to being analysed using a technique called Framework Analysis. This analysis will allow us to look for patterns in the data to compare what people tell us about their experiences.

This research will help us to better understand the needs and preferences of South Asian individuals in the use of digital health interventions.
