Research summary
The study is about comparing how well a clinician scores tooth wear on a patient compared to on a scan. The study is also about collecting data that will be used to develop an algorithm that may help dentists assess tooth wear.
Tooth wear is the loss of dental tissue and can come from for example grinding your teeth at night, brushing too hard, drinking certain types of beverages, and so on. If not managed, it can develop into painful symptoms and irreversible loss of tooth enamel. Currently, tooth wear can be difficult to detect correctly and to keep track of the progression, because the dentist can only rely on their visual assessment of the tooth wear.
The purpose of this study is to discover if dentists can score tooth wear on scan images similarly to how they score tooth wear when they have the patient in the chair. 3D scanning of teeth and digital solution in dentistry is becoming more popular and part of general practice. This study also intends to collect data on tooth wear scans that will help develop an artificial intelligence algorithm that can help dentists better manage tooth wear. This study is a collaboration between GSST and the Danish digital dentistry company, 3Shape, located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is 3Shape that wishes to develop this algorithm, and 3Shape is sponsoring this study.REC name
