Research summary
Resistant hypertension is defined as a clinic blood pressure (BP) ≥ 140/90 mmHg despite treatment with optimal or best-tolerated doses of three or more drugs, which should include a diuretic. Inadequate control is usually confirmed by ambulatory (ABPM) or home (HBPM) blood pressure monitoring (BP ≥ 135/85 mmHg) in patients whose adherence to therapy has been confirmed. Patients with resistant hypertension remain at increased risk of cardiovascular events, since their blood pressure control is unsatisfactory despite multiple medications. Beetroot juice (a source of dietary nitrate) has been shown to lower blood pressure in individuals with hypertension, but its potential benefits have not yet been investigated in individuals with resistant hypertension. In this study we will ask patients with resistant hypertension to complete two separate dietary interventions lasting 24 hours each, to assess the effect of beetroot juice on their blood pressure and cardiovascular function.
