Research summary
It is now well known that children with food allergy are often underweight and may be eating a diet that is low in many essential nutrients. However, there is little or no information available for the nutritional status of adults with food allergy and whether they are more likely to be over or underweight. In this study, a detailed food and diet history will be obtained from adults with suspected food allergy. They will also be weighed and their height measured to work out their Body Mass Index (BMI). This information will be analysed and the nutritional intakes and BMI compared to national recommendations for age and gender. In addition, participants will also be asked to complete a draft diet and clinical history questionnaire, to assess readability and ease of self-completion in preparation for a separate study evaluating the accuracy the history in predicting the final diagnosis.
