  • Research summary

Questionnaires are often used in diabetes research to predict high blood sugar levels from poor self-care and coping in patients with the view that these can then be improved. The aim of this study is to adapt and validate a new questionnaire and before using it in research it is necessary to ask patients with diabetes to complete it and see if all the questions are reasonable. We also want to find out how the new questionnaire compares to a widely used existing questionnaire (the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities). Other diabetes patients will help us by looking at the design and commenting first on the questions but then we hope to send it to at least 1000 patients and test all the responses (anonymously) to ensure the questionnaire is valid, using appropriate statistical tests. We will also ask the patients to answer a few other questions at the same time so we can match responses accordingly. This gives an even greater chance that the questionnaire will be a valid instrument for the future which can then be used for research and in patient consultations into improving outcomes for people with diabetes.
