Research summary
Purpose: To provide insight into patterns, perceptions and experiences of infant feeding in women with diabetes in pregnancy and in those who initiate breastfeeding, the early breastfeeding process.
Population: Women with diabetes in pregnancy (GDM, T1DM, T2DM) who attend the diabetes in pregnancy clinic in St Thomas' Hospital London and who delivered a live infant.
Design: Mixed methods incorporating qualitative and quantitative components.
Focus groups: Open ended questions in 3 focus groups of 5-8 women, structured around 1) experiences of infant feeding while in the hospital after delivery, 2) infant feeding after discharge to home, 3) barriers encountered, 4) support received, 5) success of breastfeeding if initiated, 6) perception of any delay to milk production and 7) perception of infant satiety.
Online questionnaire: Data will also be collected online from a postpartum survey, the H & H Lactation scale, and the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ).
