Research summary
Background:
Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is recognised as an important risk factor for dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, and may affect the presentation of people referred to a memory clinic. The presence of T2DM in people diagnosed with dementia may complicate their management and prognosis, and add to caring support needs. Likewise, diabetes and dementia together may impact their mental health and worsen their outlook further.
Aim:
To investigate the relationship between pre-existing Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and the cognitive presentation, diagnosis, and progression of dementia in addition to evaluating the impact of combined diabetes and dementia on mental health.
Methodology
This feasibility study addresses issues to inform the design of a future prospective clinical trial of longitudinal design. The study will comprise of two arms: people with dementia and pre-existing Type 2 diabetes, and people with dementia without Type 2 diabetes. Both groups will be assessed at baseline using cognitive and neuropsychiatric scales, and these will be repeated one year later. A small purposive qualitative sub-study will complement the quantitative data analysis above and will produce more in-depth understanding of relevant issues.REC name
