  • Research summary

The National Burn Care Review (2001) raised awareness of the need for improvements in burn care provision. Recent developments in medical treatment have meant that injuries that previously proved fatal can now be treated, resulting in a growing number of patients living with their injuries. Increasing consideration is therefore being given to the possible psychosocial impact of burn injuries. One aspect that has received less attention is the systematic assessment of patients’ and their families' experiences of received care and psychosocial functioning after burns. Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) ensure that patients’ views are included in the assessment of services and treatment decision making.

However, there is currently no agreement on how to most appropriately assess PROMs in burns, with the result that they are either overlooked or a diverse range of tools are used, thereby preventing direct comparison. Children aged 8 and under are the most commonly affected by burns. This age group of children are yet to develop the appropriate cognitive abilities to reliably report the status of their health. We therefore plan to develop a parent reported measure to identify the needs of these children. We will develop the draft PROM from a previous literature review and from previously collected interview data from interviews with parents of children with a burn injury (we previously gained NHS ethics approval for this study- REC number 13/SW/0014).

In this study, we will interview 15 parents of children with a burn and 5 paediatric burn specialist health professionals to ask them to review our draft PROM and provide feedback on the relevancy and readability of the PROM. Amendments will be made to the PROM based on participant feedback. The refined PROM will then be ready for psychometric testing (an additional NHS ethics application will be made for this future study).
