Research summary
The aim of the study is to develop a new tool to evaluate economic aspects of the treatment and care of people with a psychosis diagnosis (mental health).
There is no existing tool which has been developed for this purpose exclusively the setting of psychosis.
The new tool will be designed as a questionnaire, measuring patient reported health states at different time points (e.g., measuring quality of life before and after a new treatment or intervention). The tool will be developed for patients to report on their own health state (self-report).
The new questionnaire will be developed from a clinician reported tool called the HoNOS(Health of the Nation Outcome Scale). This tool is routinely used by clinicians in the mental health sector to assess patient health changes but it is not specific for use in psychosis and cannot be used without adaptation for economic purposes.
The outline will be as follows:
1) Review the appropriateness of current approaches for measuring health state changes in all areas of mental health .
2) Explore the mathematical relationship between the HoNOS and the EQ-5D (The EQ-5D is a questionnaire that is routinely used in economic evaluations for measuring health changes).
3) Generate a new tool (questionnaire) based on the HoNOS which can be completed by patients.
4) Use the new tool to evaluate routinely provided mental health care for people with psychosis in the NHS (South London and Maudsley).
