Research summary
People diagnosed with diabetes are at risk of developing a foot ulcer. A foot ulcer can increase the risk of infection to the foot. Developing an infection in the foot can lead in some cases to a foot amputation. Foot amputations have increased in the UK due to diabetes. Foot amputations can be prevented with better information on prevention. Education for people with diabetes is important. There has been a lack of educational material developed for people with diabetes on how to prevent a foot ulcer. This study is looking to recruit diabetic patients from the community in Rochdale who are at risk of a foot ulcer. This will be a 2 phase study that will take place at Nye Bevan Health Centre. Phase 1 of the study will inform phase 2. The 1st phase will consist of 4 patient focus groups to gain patients’ views and experiences of any previous education they may have received to prevent foot ulcers. These will last approximately 60 minutes. The 2nd phase of the study will be 2 workshops lasting between 60–90-minute. This will include podiatrists and diabetic patients working together to develop educational material to prevent a foot ulcer.
