Research summary
The study team have developed a survey called 'Identification of Medication adherence Barriers Questionnaire (IMAB-Qi). IMAB-Qi is an intervention designed to support healthcare professionals and patients to identify a patient’s main barriers to medication adherence during medication reviews in general practices. The IMAB-Q also provides tailored solutions to the identified main barriers that can be delivered by healthcare professionals.
This study aims to design an implementation package to support delivery of the IMAB-Qi in general practices. To do this, we need to test the IMAB-Qi with doctors, pharmacists and nurses who work in this setting in order to understand the barriers and enablers to them delivering it routinely in medication reviews. We will do this via testing sessions with healthcare professionals and patient actors at four general practices in England. We will also run a focus group at each general practice to discuss the healthcare professionals’ experiences of using the IMAB-Qi and their perceptions about the barriers and enablers to routinely delivering it. We will work with patients who have recently had a medication review at the included general practices to design the patient scenarios that will be used during the testing sessions.
Once we have understood the barriers and enablers to doctors, pharmacists and nurses delivering the IMAB-Qi routinely in medication reviews, we need to design an implementation package to address them. We will do this in partnership with patients, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, other general practice staff (e.g., Practice Managers) and people from primary care organisations (e.g., Integrated Care Boards). We will run three workshops in total to design the implementation package. The implementation package will then be used in a future study that will evaluate whether IMAB-Qi works and is good value for money for the NHS.
