Research summary
The purpose of this project is the development, assessment and validation of a tool to measure psychological adjustment to living with dementia, derived from the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale. Given the Department of Health's (2012) focus on early dementia diagnosis, it is important to assess psychological adjustment in People with Dementia (PwD) in order to establish what post-diagnostic support may be required. The proposed study will recruit dementia patients from memory clinics within Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. Patients will be seen at two time points; (1) 2-4 weeks following diagnosis, (2) 12-16 weeks following diagnosis, to complete administration of the proposed adjustment tool and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to measure and compare adjustment. Psychometric analyses will be conducted in order to validate the adjustment tool and the study will also explore what demographic (e.g. age, gender, etc) and clinical factors (e.g. type of dementia diagnosis, cognitive functioning) influence adjustment to living with dementia.
