  • Research summary

This research will look at ways to help include more people in research on Adult Social Care to ensure that the Government can monitor the quality of the care people are receiving in the UK. The Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (known as ASCOT) is a set of questions which are included in current surveys of social care. ASCOT questions have been designed to get people’s views on, or other information that relates to, how much their care helps in different areas of their lives such as feeling clean and comfortable, having control over daily life and feeling safe. In this research, which will last 18 months, we want to:

Look at whether we can use observations of the care people get in their homes to get information on how much, and if, social care improves their lives. We have already done work like this in care homes. We will develop guidelines on doing an observation and try this out in a small number of homes.

The research-funded by the Department of Health-is being undertaken by the QORU research unit (who developed ASCOT) and who are based at the University of Kent.
