  • Research summary

Improving the care health professionals provide requires robust tools to measure quality from the patients’ perspective. Understanding the patient experience is becoming ever more important for health service organisations both nationally and internationally. This has moved on from simply asking patients how satisfied they are with services, towards trying to gain a deeper understanding of how patients perceive the quality of their care, based on what they value, expect and need. Perioperative care is an area that has a number of patient satisfaction measures, but some of these measures may not be generalizable to the UK health service due to having been developed internationally. Where research has been conducted within the UK, there are further issues which reduce generalizability- no questionnaire currently exists that looks across the full range of anaesthetic experiences, patient length of stay, and hospital specialties. A further key issue with the current literature has been the degree of involvement of patients in the tools developed. Given the need to represent the patient’s perspective when considering patient experience, this is a key limitation of many of the questionnaires previously published.

The current project aims to develop a questionnaire to meet the need for a robustly developed measure to systematically assess the patient perioperative experience, and allow healthcare professionals to better understand and improve the quality of care provided. Phase one of the research will use a mixture of literature searching and patient interviews to develop a draft questionnaire. An expert panel will ratify the draft questionnaire. In phase two ‘think aloud’ interviews will be conducted with patients and staff to identify problematic questions. The questionnaire will be further refined to produce the final draft version. A future project will be undertaken to include futher testing and refinement of the questionnaire in a wider population.
