Research summary
This study aims to answer the following research question-What alleviates the stress a child with a learning disability experiences whilst attending a hospital visit? The research aim is to develop a personalised hospital passport for shared information and as a consequence we hope that the experience will be less stressful for parents and carers too. The passport will be accessible to the child, family and members of staff caring for the child in order to gain knowledge about the child's disability and the most effective way to prevent a stressful experience or alleviate the distress. Families with a child with a learning disability are invited to complete a questionnaire and attend a focus group at the special school or the local hospital to share their experiences of hospital visits and how their child can be calmed in a stressful situation. A pilot passport will be evaluated and adjusted accordingly to a follow up focus group.
