Research summary
Surgeons talk to patients before operating on them, but what is said during consultations is rarely studied. This project will aim to define a core set of information for surgeons to use in consultations with people with cancer of the mouth or throat who are offered an operation. This is important because it is likely that people with these diseases have complex information needs that should be met before consenting to surgery. Study of current practice using interviews with patients and surgeons, and recordings of consultations will identify relevant information in addition to the information that is available from reviews of scientific literature and patient information leaflets. Survey and consensus methods will help reduce this to a core information set that will help patients better understand their intended surgery.
