Research summary
Several population-based studies have demonstrated an excess risk for asthma in adult workers exposed to cleaning agents. Case studies of occupational asthma in cleaners have identified a number of chemicals which may be responsible for the increased incidence of asthma including benzalkonium chloride, ethanolamines and chloramines. Any typical characteristics in the clinical presentation of occupational asthma in cleaners have not been determined, and the mechanism of induction of asthma is generally not well understood, with little evidence for specific respiratory sensitization for most agents.
We wish to describe the characteristics of workers with occupational asthma caused by cleaning agents, who have been notified from the Birmingham Regional Occupational Lung Disease Service to the UK HSE Surveillance of work-related respiratory diseases (SWORD) scheme between 1989 and 2015, in order to provide insight into the mechanisms of this disease.
