Research summary
Children with the rare haematological syndrome, “Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome“ have been shown to have a significantly higher levels of dental decay and gum disease than controls. This research aims to investigate the oral health of children with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome and other bone marrow failure syndromes compared to an age, gender and socioeconomic status matched control group. Study participants will be recruited from children with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome and other bone marrow failure syndromes attending the paediatric Haematology services at Leeds General Infirmary. Controls will be recruited from healthy children attending the dental trauma and orthodontic clinics at the Leeds Dental Institute. Study participants will undergo an oral examination, and levels of dental decay, gum disease, soft tissue abnormalities and dental defects will be recorded.
