Research summary
This study aims to understand whether a newly designed dementia workshop is practical and effective. The dementia workshop will be delivered to a group of staff working at three residential care homes and compared to a group of staff working at three residential care homes who will not receive the dementia workshop. The care homes will be recruited from either Norfolk or Suffolk. Which care homes receive the dementia workshop will be determined randomly. Residential staff working in any role (except management), who have weekly face to face contact with residents, will be invited to attend the dementia workshop.
The dementia workshop is made up of four exercises, which attempt to increase staff knowledge of dementia care, freedom of choice and empowerment. All six care homes will be able to attend any training that they usually receive, in addition to the dementia workshop.
Residents who have dementia will be observed and the researcher will make notes. Observation of staff and residents with dementia, will be undertaken in six care homes. The staff will be asked to fill in a questionnaire which seeks to gain insights into the type of knowledge that staff have of dementia. Before the dementia workshop takes place each care home will be assessed for the quality of their usual care, using a standardised rating scale. It is hoped that any new insights conveyed to staff during the dementia workshop will improve care provision for people with dementia within care homes.
