Research summary
In the UK the incidence of people diagnosed with diabetes in 2013 was 2.7 million and this is expected to increase to 4.6 million by 2030. As the number of people with diabetes continues to rise most health experts agree that diabetes represents one of the biggest health challenges affecting the UK. Physical activity and exercise are key components of the on-going lifestyle management of diabetes. Physical activity improves metabolic control which tackles cardiovascular risk factors and other associated co-morbidities. However, research shows that most people with diabetes do not engage in recommended levels of physical activity.
The aim of the research is to gain a greater understanding of the health needs of adults with diabetes in relation to physical activity and thereby inform the development of appropriate physical activity interventions.
The research will target adults with diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, attending Airedale hospital and will use a mixed-method and case-study approach. Quantitative data will be collected relating to the demographic and health characteristics of the total adult diabetes population. Qualitative data relating to physical activity attitudes, levels of engagement, needs and wants will be collected. Information will be collated to inform the development of physical activity interventions.
The research is funded by Leeds Beckett University in collaboration with Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, where the study will be conducted. The study will last 1 year.
