Research summary
Cancer psychology is a vitally important part of cancer management. Prospective measure of preference is a novel concept, which utilises the concepts of Willingness to Trade/Gamble. Analysis of this area would provide information for patients and clinicians that would allow them to make appropriate individualised decisions on cancer management.
This is a prospective pilot study that will be carried out at St Mark’s Hospital, London Northwest Hospitals NHS Trust and will be part of an educational (MD) project. A qualitative study by methodology, would constitute focus group discussions as research tools. This study constitutes of eight to twelve recurrent rectal cancer patients and explore the perspective of patient decision in cancer surgery. Recruitment of the participants will be from the complex cancer clinic at St Mark’s Hospital, had surgery for complex rectal cancer. Initial approach will be in the complex cancer follow up clinic. The clinician responsible for the patient will make the initial approach for participation in the study.
